Repetition is used a lot when learning mathematics. This solving linear equations worksheet pack contains 240 questions and answers. You are required to solve a linear equation involving bracket expansions.
There are 5 different worksheets with 48 questions per sheet. Answers are provided for each worksheet. This gives students plenty of opportunities to practise answering these types of questions. Teachers also have the option of distributing different sheets to students.
Each worksheet is numbered individually and can easily be paired with the correct answer sheet.
In my classroom, I use these solving linear equations worksheets as online resources for students. I have also added this particular question style to the Question Generator so that questions can be generated on demand by students. Using the random option also means that students get some spaced practice.
Here is an example of one of the questions plus my full solution:
$$\begin{aligned}2(2 k-1)-3(k+3) & =-7 \\\\4 k-2-3 k-9 & =-7 \\\\4 k-3 k-2-9 & =-7 \\\\k-11 & =-7 \\\\k & =-7+11 \\\\k & =4\end{aligned}$$
The question types in this worksheet pack are very similar. Students are required to expand brackets with a single coefficient term which could be positive or negative.
Here is a second example, again with the full solution:
$$\begin{aligned}2(3 d-1)-3(d+1) & =4 \\\\6 d-2-3 d-3 & =4 \\\\6 d-3 d-2-3 & =4 \\\\3 d-5 & =4 \\\\3 d & =4+5 \\\\3 d & =9 \\\\d & =\frac{9}{3} \\\\d & =3\end{aligned}$$

What are some of the benefits of learning to solve linear equations?
There are several benefits of learning to solve linear equations for students:
Linear equations are a fundamental concept in algebra and are used to model many real-world situations. By learning how to solve linear equations, students can analyse and solve a wide range of problems involving quantities that vary linearly.
Solving linear equations helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It requires students to analyse the problem, identify the relevant information, and use logical reasoning to find a solution.
Linear equations are a stepping stone to more advanced mathematical concepts. Solving linear equations is an important prerequisite for learning more advanced topics such as quadratic equations, polynomial equations, and systems of linear equations.
Learning to solve linear equations can improve students’ confidence and self-esteem. When students are able to solve problems and see that their solutions are correct, it can give them a sense of accomplishment and boost their confidence in their ability to do maths.
Linear equations are used in many fields, including engineering, physics, economics, and computer science. By learning how to solve linear equations, students can gain a strong foundation in mathematics that can be applied in a variety of contexts and disciplines.
