This is a great little activity to embed equivalent fractions. This pack of resources contains multiple worksheets where the student is required to shade images to make equivalent fractions. The worksheets are available as PDF documents. The artwork has been produced to an extremely high standard.

The images below give one example from one of the worksheets. The student is required to shade the second image so that an equivalent amount is shaded.

10 Tips for Teaching Fractions

  1. Start with understanding basic fraction concepts: Before diving into more complex fraction topics, make sure students have a strong foundation in understanding what fractions represent and how they can be used to represent parts of a whole.

  2. Use visual representations: Fractions can be difficult for students to conceptualise, so using visual representations such as fraction circles or blocks can be helpful in demonstrating how fractions work.

  3. Practice identifying fractions: Have students practice identifying fractions in the real world, such as finding fractions on a measuring cup or dividing a pizza into equal slices to represent fractions.

  4. Understand equivalent fractions: Help students understand that fractions can be simplified and that two fractions can represent the same value, such as 1/2 and 2/4.

  5. Practice comparing fractions: Have students compare fractions with the same denominator and then with different denominators. You can also have them use visual representations to see the difference in size between fractions.

  6. Introduce mixed numbers: Once students have a solid understanding of fractions, introduce mixed numbers (whole numbers and fractions combined).

  7. Practice adding and subtracting fractions: Start with fractions with the same denominator and then move on to fractions with different denominators. Using visual representations can be helpful in this process.

  8. Introduce multiplying fractions: Start with fractions with the same denominator and then move on to fractions with different denominators.

  9. Practice dividing fractions: Introduce dividing fractions and have students practice with both proper and improper fractions.

  10. Use online resources: There are many online resources available for teaching fractions, such as games and interactive activities that can help students understand and practice fraction concepts in a fun and engaging way.
