Order of Operations Example Question
Many teachers will use an equivalent of BODMAS or PEMDAS. Each letter represents the order in which calculations should be performed.
In Australia and some other countries, we use BODMAS which represents:
- B – Brackets
- O – pOwers
- D – Division
- M – Multiplication
- A – Addition
- S – Subtraction
PEMDAS is used mainly in the US and represents:
- P – Parentheses
- E – Exponents
- M – Multiplication
- D – Division
- A – Addition
- S – Subtraction
For example, suppose you have to find the value of: \(2+3-6\times 2\)
Going through the list of operations in order, you can see that there are no brackets, powers, or divisions to perform. Therefore, the first operation is multiplication.
The calculation would be as follows:
$$
\begin{align}
&\space 2+3-6\times 2\\\\
=&\space2+3-12\\\\
=&\space5-15\\\\
=&-10
\end{align}
$$
Note that division/multiplication and addition/subtraction should be performed in the order that they appear.
For example:
$$
\begin{align}
&\space 5-3+6\\\\
=&\space 2+6\\\\
=&\space8\\\\
\end{align}
$$
