First, ensure that students have a solid foundation in calculating the areas of common polygons. Once they are comfortable with this then calculating the areas of compound shapes is the next logical step.

As a bonus, this pack contains a zipped folder of images in SVG format meaning that you can use these as the basis for your own questions, should you wish. SVG images can be opened in most of the major drawing packages. One way you could use them is by simply opening them in your browser and projecting them onto the board. You can then write the dimensions on the shapes thus providing you with unlimited questions. I find it useful to change the units for the dimensions too. Mixing units (mm/cm/m) adds a further level of complexity for students.
